"This reminds me of the Alps" was the statement made by Hoss, as he climbed his first grassy bald and took in the expansive view of the mountains surrounding him. Thirteen hikers considered this hike on the Appalachian Trail to be a really special one. Wayne even commented that he felt the views were in his top five anywhere we have hiked. From both Wayah Bald where we began our 10 mile hike, and Siler Bald at 5218 ft., the views south to Standing Indian and Albert Mountain were pretty awe inspiring. One could really take in the grandness of the beautiful Standing Indian Mountain, which is the highest on the Trail south of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park.
No, we were not on Silers Bald in the Smokies, as some members of the hiking club seemed to be certain we were headed. Next time I suggest they read their newsletter description more closely and have more faith in their leader! We were on the A.T. in North Carolina about 110 miles from the starting point of the Trail. And as expected, we counted at least 25 north bound thru-hikers during the day with many more in Franklin enjoying the Trail festivities held there this weekend. Our newer members were able to meet thru-hikers and learn about trail names and how the Trail community is created, as these determined and hopeful folks make their way north to Maine. As is typical of the A.T. and its magic, our CHC hikers today were asking lots of questions and anticipating hiking more sections in the future. A couple of today's group came close to turning around and heading north with the thru-hikers, the leader being one of them! But, thankfully reality sunk in, and I realized I need to work a few more years before I can manage a thru-hike. But, I do expect another long distance hike to be part of my future! Those experiencing the beauty of the mountains and the camaraderie of their fellow hikers were Spears McAllester, Tim Chomyn, Hoss Baghay, John Hyler (welcome John), Bruce and Cindy Richie, Jerry Wright, Wayne Chambers, Elizabeth O'Connor, Betty Petty, Melissa Moreau, Donald Box, and hike leader, Susan Faidley reporting.
